On January 31, 2010 The church membership was finally able to meet the Scouts and Scouters of Troop 73. Normally Scout Sunday is held on the 1st Sunday in February to coincide with the Birthday of Scouting (February 8, 1910) but this would require upsetting the church schedule to have a blended service on this day. With this in mind, the Pastor and leaders of Troop 73 decided that Troop 73 will have Scout Sunday on the 5th Sunday in January every year instead so that the Blended Service of that Sunday will then meet the Scouts. On this Scout Sunday, The Troop Committee Chair, Gary Dickinson, presented the pastor with the first Framed Charter for Troop 73. The congregation also met one of the other Committee members, Mrs. Sharon Yarbrough, Troop members, Senior Patrol Leader Michael Moss, Patrol Leader Thomas Johnson, Troop Scribe Richard Duggar, and Toby Smith, Devonte Shipman, Roderick Devaughn, and Nahshon Grayer of the Night Wolves Patrol. The troop started with Presentation of the Colors (Posting the U.S. Flag and Church Flag) for the congregation in a Ceremony where we also sang “God Bless America”. All the Scouts were in uniform (you can see the scouts HERE) and the congregation laid hands on the scouts while praying for them. The scout troop hopes to add more boys to their ranks so we can add another patrol to the troop and participate in more events and activities for the church and the Glynlea community at large. We are also working on a list of Alumni Scouts (Former Scouts and Scout Leaders/Volunteers who would like to help teach the boys skills of scouting and to see how scouting has changed over the years. This is also part of our year of Celebration for 100 Years of Scouting. On February 8th, Scouting celebrated its 100th Birthday and Scouting as a whole is participating in a whole year of Celebration, and looking forward to another 100 years. Troop 73 can always use more volunteers or assistance with the scouts. If you think you can help, please contact the Scoutmaster (Patrick Adams), the Committee Chair (Gary Dickinson) or the Pastor and we will get you to the right person or going in the right direction. If you want to see what we are doing, The Scout Troop meets every Saturday at 4 pm unless we are on a campout, excursion or other activity away from the church. We are usually near the Fellowship Hall or in the Field near the church. We like to again thank the Pastor and congregation of Glynlea Grace for allowing the Scouts to use the building and facilities of the Church while the Troop leaders try to make new leaders of our young boys. One day they may be our leaders in our community or nation or their own businesses. |
